Finger paint rainbow craft

Finger paint rainbow craft for preschoolers

A fun and colourful finger paint rainbow craft for preschool and kindergarten-age children.

Rainbows. I don’t know about your kids, but mine LOVE them.

However, we live in a part of the world that doesn’t get a whole lot of rain, so those elusive rainbows are few and far between.

In order to fill our life with a few more rainbows, we decided to make some of our own. And so, I present to you: our fun finger paint rainbow craft (complete with fluffy clouds!)

This is a fun, colourful craft and a great excuse for your little one to get messy and covered in paint.

It’s also good fine motor practice for your child as they will need to finger paint along the rainbow shape and try to keep within the black lines. This craft is great for preschool and kindergarten-aged children.

What you will need

  • rainbow template (you can find it at the end of this post)
  • finger paints (or just whatever regular kids’ paint you have)
  • scissors
  • cotton balls
  • white glue

How to make your finger paint rainbow craft

Step 1

To start with, print off a copy of the rainbow template, either on paper or thin cardstock.

Cardstock works better if you have it as it doesn’t go so wrinkly when the paint has dried.

Step 2

Next, it’s time to paint the rainbow.

When I did this activity with my kids, I put a small amount of each of the 7 rainbow colours in separate dishes. I then brought out each dish of paint one at a time, starting with the red and then working down the rainbow.

I did this mainly because my toddler was also doing this activity and if we’d had multiple colours out at the start, they would soon all have been mixed together and general chaos would have ensued.

Once, you’ve painted your rainbow, you can move onto the clouds whilst the paint dries.

Step 3

Start by printing out the two clouds from the template. Turn both clouds over so that the black outlines are on the back.

To make the clouds fluffy, we used a couple of cotton balls which we tore up into little pieces.

Cover each cloud with a thin layer of white glue and stick the cotton ball pieces onto each cloud.

Step 4

The final step is to assemble your rainbow.

Assembling the rainbow is super simple – just a few blobs of white glue on the back of the clouds to stick them onto the front of the rainbow.
