Paper Plate Chick

chick craft made from a paper plate

Make a sweet Easter chick craft from a paper plate. Simple to make, this is a great spring or Easter craft for young crafters

So it’s officially spring and Easter is on its way (hoorah!). And that means it’s time to get started on all those sweet spring crafts – think bunnies, lambs, flowers and sweet fluffy yellow chicks.

And so today I have for you a paper plate chick!

Sure, our version is not quite as soft and fuzzy as a real chick, but it’s cute, jolly and a fun craft to make during the springtime or in the run-up to Easter.

The good news also is that this paper plate chick craft is very straightforward to make, so it’s a good choice for younger children – preschool, kindergarten and up.

And so, if you want to see how to make a paper plate chick, I suggest we get cracking (please excuse the pun). Step-by-step instructions are below.

What you will need

  • paper plate
  • yellow paint
  • two orange pipe cleaners
  • yellow paper or cardstock
  • google eyes x 2
  • small piece of orange paper or cardstock
  • glue and tape

How to make a paper plate chick

Step 1

Start with your paper plate. Cut into a chick head-and-body shape like so:

Leave the bottom edge as is, but trim the side and tops to make a roundish body and smaller round head.

Step 2

Next, paint your paper plate yellow.

We used acrylic paint as it covers really well and we only needed one coat.

Set the paper plate to one side to dry.

Step 3

Next, it’s time to make some wings.

Start with a rectangle of yellow paper or cardstock folded in half. Draw a wing shape on one side and then cut it out.

Because it is folded over, you’ll get two identical wings of course. This saves you some drawing and also means that the wings will be the same size and shape.

Step 3

Attach the two wings to the paper plate like so:

You can use a loop of tape, double-sided tape or glue.

Step 4

Next, make a beak out of some orange paper or card.

Start by folding a small piece of paper in half, then make two cuts to create a pointed beak. Leave the folded edge in tact.

Glue the beak onto the paper plate like so:

Step 5

Next add two eyes to the chick. You an use googly eyes if you have them, or you can draw two eyes on paper, cut them out and glue them on.

Experiment with eyes of different sizes to give your chick the character you want. We went for one eye bigger than the other – to give our chick character (and also because we couldn’t find two eyes of the same size in our craft box).

Step 6

Next, make the chick’s two legs out of orange pipe cleaners.

Start by folding the pipe cleaner so it looks like a letter ‘M’ with a tall bit of pipe cleaner on the left hand side.

Then, take the far right piece of pipe cleaner, bring it over to the long strip on the lefts and twist it around to secure it in place.

Do this again to make the second leg.

Then attach both legs to the back of the paper plate with tape like so:

When you turn the paper plate over, it should look like this:

Step 7

Finally, make a little tuft of feathers for the top of the chick’s head.

Take a small piece of yellow paper (approx 3cm x 3cm) and use scissors to make little snips into the top of the paper like so:

Then glue this onto the back of the paper plate so that the feathery part shows above the top of the paper plate.

And with that your sweet paper plate chick is complete!
