Summer Fortune Teller (Cootie Catcher)

A fantastic summer fortune teller – a great paper folding craft activity for a summer party or family gathering!
In our family, we absolutely love making fortune tellers (also known as ‘cootie catchers’). They’re not only fun to make, but so fun to use too.
Today, as we head into summer (hoorah!) I have a summer-themed fortune teller to share with you. It’s made from a ready-to-fold template, which you can find in our Etsy store along with lots of other cootie catcher templates too. Simply print the template and you’re reading to get folding.
This summer fortune teller is a great kids’ activity to do during a summer party or family gathering. It also makes a fun end of the year activity for the classroom too. The finished fortune teller is filled with summer-themed questions or conversation starters that children can enjoy asking friends/classmates/family members. A great summer crafty activity for kids of all ages.

How to make a summer fortune teller, step by step
What you will need:
- scissors
- colouring supplies (optional)
Step 1
First of all print off the fortune teller template. There are two versions: a colour version (just print and get folding) or a black ink version.
The black ink version is perfect for children who want to add their own colours.

Step 2
Once you have printed and coloured the template (optional), cut the template out so it is a square.

Step 3
Next, fold the square diagonally – join opposite corners together and crease.
Then, open out the square and fold diagonally in the opposite direction.

Where the two diagonal lines meet is where your mid point is.
Step 4
With the printed side face down, fold each corner into the mid point. Once all corners have been folded in, your fortune teller should look like this:

Step 5
Next, turn your fortune teller over.
Then, again, fold each corner into the mid point, so that your fortune teller looks like this:

Step 6
Fold the fortune teller in half to make a rectangle and crease along the folded edge. Open and repeat in the other direction.

Step 7
To help your fortune teller take shape, hook your index finger and thumb under two adjacent pictures and press together. Do the same with other hand and the remaining two pictures.

Your fortune teller is now finished and ready to use.
How to use your summer fortune teller
Never made a fortune teller before and not sure how they work? Here’s the deal…
To begin with, ask someone (friend, family member etc) to select a summer picture from the outside of the fortune teller – in our case sunglasses, beach, ice cream or sun. Then as you spell out each letter of the word e.g. S-U-N, open the fortune teller opposite ways each time you say a letter (so that a different set of numbers are visible on the inside each time).
When you finish spelling the word, ask your chosen person to choose one of the four visible numbers, for example 8.
Then open the fortune teller back and forth the corresponding number of times (in our case, 8 times). When you finish, ask them to choose another number. Repeat with the new number.
Finally, ask them to choose a number one last time. This time, the number they choose can be folded open to reveal a summer-themed question. There are eight different questions to choose.

The great thing about our printable template is that it is included in two versions: one with questions (see above), but also one blank version too. This means that children can make up their own questions or messages if they want.
