Valentine Fortune Teller (Cootie Catcher)
This fun Valentine fortune teller is great fun for kids to make at home on in the classroom this Valentine’s Day.
Who doesn’t love a fortune teller?!
Growing up, fortune tellers were always a great go-to activity on a rainy afternoon. Not only are the fun to make, but they would then lead to lots of fun and entertainment as you tell people’s fortunes for hours afterwards.
Fortune tellers (also known as cootie catchers) are also fun because you can incorporate all sorts of different themes. (If you don’t know what a fortune teller/cootie catcher is, see this post for the run down, plus a video showing you how to make one).
Today, I’d love to show you our Valentine fortune teller. This a great activity to do in the run up to Valentine’s Day in February. It can be made at home or can be a great activity to do in the classroom during a Valentine classroom party.
This fortune teller is made from a printable template, which you can find in our Etsy store here.
The template comes in two versions – one colour version and one black ink version in case your child wants to colour their own.
The fortune teller has four different Valentine pictures: a rose, box of chocolates, Valentine mail, and a heart. Inside there are eight different questions all about Valentine’s Day – great conversation starters!

What you will need
There’s really not much needed to make this fortune teller. All you’ll need is:
- scissors (to trim the template)
- colouring supplies (optional)
How to make a Valetine Fortune Teller
Step 1
Print out the Valentine fortune teller template of your choice. There is one version with conversation starter questions and also a a version without. This way children can add their own questions (or jokes etc) if they want.
Also included are black ink versions of the cootie catcher template so that children can decorate and colour them, if they want.
Step 2
Trim the template down so that it is a square shaped. Then you’re ready to get folding.
Step 3
Fold the square in half diagonally, joining two opposite corners together and creasing.
Open out the paper and do the same in the opposite direction.
Where the two creases meet is your mid point.
Step 4
Turn your paper over so that the printed side is face down.
Then, fold each of the four corners into the mid point and crease.
Step 5
Again, turn your paper over (so that the questions are face up).
Once more, fold each of the four corners into the mid point and crease.
Step 6
Next fold the fortune teller in half and crease along the edge. Open out and repeat in the opposite direction.
Step 7
To help your fortune teller take shape, hook your index finger and thumb under two adjacent pictures and press together. Do the same with other hand and the remaining two pictures.
Push your thumbs and index fingers together to help the fortune teller take its shape.
Your fortune teller is now ready to use!
