Winter Fortune Teller

WINTER FORTUNE TELLER

A winter cootie catcher – the perfect snow day craft activity!

If you live in a part of the world with plenty of snow (like we do) then chances are, there’ll be a few snow days coming your way this winter.

And what makes a good snow day activity when you’re stuck inside? Fortune tellers.

They make minimal mess, they’re satisfying to make, plus they’re fun to play with afterwards as you get to ask questions to anyone and everyone you can find.

Here at The Craft Balloon, we have quite a few print-and-fold templates for fortune tellers (or cootie catchers, as they are also called). And today we are adding a winter-themed cootie catcher to our collection.

This winter fortune teller comes in the form of a printable template. It’s available in either a colour version, or in a black ink version (if children want to colour their own).

On the outside of the fortune teller there are four pictures to choose from: hot cocoa, an ice skate, mittens, and a snowman.

Inside the fortune tellers are eight numbers to choose from, followed by eight winter-themed questions/conversation starters. Children will I’m sure enjoy annoying their siblings, friends and family members with the many questions inside the fortune teller. It really is a great activity for those chilly cold-weather days when you don’t want to (or actually can’t) go outside.

If you want to see how to make these wintery cootie catchers then all the instructions are to follow.

What you will need

  • colouring supplies (optional)
  • scissors

How to make a winter cootie catcher / fortune teller

Step 1

Start by printing off the template. There is both a colour version and a black ink version. There are also versions included without the winter-themed questions if your child wants to write their own conversation starters, fortunes or jokes.

Step 2

If your child is using the black ink printable, it’s time to colour the fortune teller. Use colouring pencils or markers – whichever works best!

Step 3

Next, trim the fortune teller so that it is a square.

Step 4

Fold the square diagonally (join two opposite corners together) and crease.  Open out and repeat again but in the opposite direction.

Step 5

With the printed side face down, fold each corner into the middle point of the paper and crease.

Step 6

Turn the paper over so the questions are face up.  Then, again fold each corner into the middle point and crease.

Step 7

Fold the fortune teller in half to make a rectangle and crease along the folded edge. Open and repeat in the other direction.

Step 7

To help your fortune teller take shape, hook your index finger and thumb under two adjacent pictures and press together.  Do the same with other hand and the remaining two pictures.

Your wintery cootie catcher is now ready to use!
